New Novel Explores the Darker Side of Identity Theft
More than just a thriller, a new novel by Rod Summitt, shows just how far some will go to cover up identity theft.

Oshawa, ON (MMPUBS.COM) May 20, 2008 -- Every time we cannot immediately find our wallet, our passport, or our credit cards, we experience that momentary dread of identity theft. Yet few of us imagine the subtle terror of finding an old friend inexplicably replaced as is the case in “Reunion with a Killer” (ISBN 9781591460985, Crystal Dreams Publishing, 2008) by Rod Summitt and Richard Edgerton.

Set in the fictional college town of Enderling Iowa, as peaceful in appearance to visiting alumni as it was during their student days, it is the juxtaposition of the serenity enjoyed by the townspeople, with the chilling insight into the deception which makes “Reunion with a Killer” such a potent read.

The story begins inconspicuously, with a man visiting his college town in hopes of seeing an old roommate, 39 years after going their own separate ways. But when he finds an imposter in his place, he enlists the aid of the town journalist in pursuit of three questions. Who is the imposter? Why is he doing it? And what happened to the man he replaced?

Not only does the book capture the town atmosphere beautifully, but the characters are rich and vivid. The tone of the main protagonists alone is so distinct and so natural in their reactions, down to their nervous habits, that it just brings them to life. The question is: can they know the truth and stay alive?

More than just a suspense thriller, “Reunion with a Killer” pays tribute to the lasting impact a person can have on another, which time can’t remove. A theme which is strikingly appropriate as the book itself is a commemoration of its late co-author Richard Edgerton.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Rod Summitt, former social science teacher and retired retail manager, is now author of four novels with more on the way.  Now in his 60s, he lives each day to the fullest. Richard Edgerton, in contrast, discovered his love for writing in his teens, served in the US Navy as a journalist, and continued to pursue broadcast and print journalism while earning his B.A. in English at Hamline University, Minnesota. It was during the 1970s, when both men were teaching high school, that they collaborated on the original manuscript for “Reunion with a Killer.” Sadly, Richard Edgerton passed away in 1983.
